Member Alert: IV Fluid Conservation Urged After Hurricane Strikes Major Supplier
CDA has notified us of a situation that may affect our members and their practices. The devastation caused by Hurricane Helene has had a significant impact on a key manufacturer of IV fluids.
On October 3rd, we received news that the Baxter plant in North Carolina, which produces approximately 60% of the U.S. supply of IV fluids, sustained severe damage. This disruption is expected to create shortages and delays for the foreseeable future.
We want to bring this to the attention of our member dentists, particularly those utilizing IV sedation or performing oral surgery. All oral and maxillofacial surgeons, pediatric dentists, dental anesthesiologists, and periodontists should carefully monitor their current supplies and plan accordingly.
As shared in a recent report from NBC News, patients are still receiving the fluids they need at this time, but it is too early to determine what actions may be necessary if the shortage persists.
