The San Diego County Dental Society (SDCDS) is proud to introduce the SDCDS Academy of Learning, a new initiative designed to address the critical shortage of dental office staff, particularly dental assistants. This innovative program aims to provide high-quality training to individuals interested in a career in dentistry while directly supporting SDCDS members in need of skilled staff.
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Dental Assisting Instructor to teach a cohort of 10-15 students for a 10-week synchronous program. The ideal instructor will lead and promote this program, ensuring that graduates are among the most well-trained dental assistants in the region. The ideal candidate will not only provide excellent instruction but also actively contribute to the growth and development of the Academy by expanding course offerings and creating connections with local dental professionals.

Job Title: Dental Assisting Instructor
Location: Remote (synchronous Online/ In-Person Instruction)
Employment Type: Part-Time (12 hours per week)
Compensation: $45 per hour
Program Length: 10-Week Sessions
Position Overview:
We are seeking a knowledgeable and dedicated Dental Assisting Instructor to teach synchronous, online/in-person 10-week courses for a state-licensed dental assisting program. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in dental assisting or dentistry, with a passion for education and student success. This position requires 12 hours per week of instructional time, grading, and student support.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver engaging and comprehensive online instruction in dental assisting, following the established curriculum.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback on student assignments and assessments.
- Monitor student progress and offer support through email, discussion boards, and online office hours.
- Ensure that course content aligns with industry standards and complies with BPPE requirements.
- Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student engagement and success.
- Stay updated with current dental industry practices, techniques, and regulations to enhance course instruction.
- Collaborate with SDCDS Academy of Learning administrators to maintain academic integrity and continuous program improvement.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Must be a Licensed Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) or Licensed Dentist (DDS/DMD) in good standing.
- Minimum of three years of clinical experience in a dental office or related setting.
- Prior teaching or training experience (preferred but not required).
- Strong knowledge of dental procedures, terminology, infection control, radiography, and chairside assisting.
- Familiarity with online learning platforms, educational technology, and digital communication tools.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to engage and support students in an online, asynchronous learning environment.
Skills & Competencies:
- Teaching & Communication: Ability to present complex information in an accessible and engaging manner.
- Time Management: Efficiently manage grading, student inquiries, and course facilitation within the 12-hour workweek.
- Technical Proficiency: Comfortable using learning management systems (LMS), email, and online discussion platforms.
Student Support:
- Ability to mentor, guide, and motivate students through online interactions.
- Industry Knowledge: Up-to-date expertise in dental assisting techniques, procedures, and regulations.
